The hardest climbing day of my life, and I have done several serious climbs. This one however was the most cruel, the Talimena Scenic Drive is both beautiful and if you are on a bicycle, very cruel. The road follows the top of the mountain range so it goes up and down, up and down, ad infinitum;well, not really, but for about 50 miles which took 4:15, the first 122.5 miles took 6:45 and we did them at about 18.5 mph avg. I was doing well until the road turned to chip-seal which is very rough and that just demoralized me. Enough complaining, I still came in second today and I'm happy about that. And as I said, the views were spectacular.

Water, lots of it, all the water that we didn't see in California, Arizona and New Mexico is in Oklahoma. Rivers, creeks, floded fields, streams of every size and beckoning waterfalls. Not many photos today as I was just pedaling away.

Green everywhere.

Water everywhere.

I liked the minimum speed requirement, I guess you need to ask for permission to go any slower.

No kidding, 13% grade on a bike is brutal.

Some of the view, hard to appreciate with the little camera.

Thank goodness the road got better at the border with Arkansas, I was going insane.

And then at the top, this. Sorry, I didn't have the will to stop and find out.

Stolen photo from Talimena to give you an idea of the road, it visits the top of every hill on the range.
